Harness or Collar for French Bulldogs: Making the Right Choice

Harness or Collar for French Bulldogs: Making the Right Choice

Nearly every Frenchie owner faces the dilemma of deciding between a collar or a harness for their pup. Which one should you choose?

A harness is a piece of canine equipment consisting of a strap which goes between the front legs and is connected to a belt around the waist.

Collars and harnesses serve distinct purposes, primarily differing in how they distribute the weight and impact your Frenchie's well-being. When considering the choice between these two options, it's crucial to take into account various elements which can affect your French Bulldog's health and comfort.

A harness offers a significant advantage when it comes to distributing the pressure from the leash. Unlike a collar, which concentrates this force on a pet's neck, a harness disperses it evenly across the Frenchie's chest and shoulders.

This design ensures that, in situations where your Frenchie suddenly pulls on the leash or becomes overly excited, the neck is not compressed, and there's no risk of choking or coughing. This added safety makes harnesses a fantastic choice for many dogs, especially those prone to pulling or with delicate necks.

However, be aware that not all dogs are candidates for harnesses, especially puppies under the age of 2. During their early developmental stages, puppies' skeletons are still forming, and this period is crucial for musculoskeletal health.

Using a harness on a young, growing dog may potentially lead to issues with their limbs and spine, as the pressure distribution might not align with their rapidly changing body structure. In such cases, it's advisable to consult your veterinarian for guidance on when it's safe to transition to a harness.

Choosing the right harness for your French Bulldog

When you're looking to purchase a harness for your dear pet, it's crucial to take multiple aspects into account to guarantee their well-being during walks and various activities. Here are some key factors to consider:

  1. Material Matters: Opt for a soft and smooth material, as it's gentle on your French Bulldog's skin and fur. This will prevent chafing and discomfort, especially during extended periods of wear.
  2. Proper Fit: It shouldn't be too tight, which can restrict your Frenchie's movement and cause unwelcome discomfort. Well-fitted harnesses shouldn't put undue pressure on the spine or any other part of your French Bulldog's body. The correct size can be determined if you are able to slip your hand between your Frenchie's body and the straps with ease.
  3. Harness Types: Various harnesses are crafted with distinct purposes in mind. Walking harnesses are commonly used for daily strolls, while riding harnesses are more specialized and are employed in activities like skiing competitions. Guard harnesses offer added protection and control for certain breeds, and car harnesses are vital for securing your pet safely during car rides.
  4. Additional Features: Check if the harness comes with a softening lining for extra comfort. The metal elements, such as buckles and D-rings, should be durable and of high quality to ensure they don't break during use. Consider a harness with a reflector, which enhances visibility during nighttime walks, ensuring the safety of your Frenchie on the road.

Pet collars

Selecting the appropriate collar for your Frenchie is a pivotal choice, as it not only functions as a practical tool but can also serve as a fashionable accessory. Collars can be categorized into several types, each designed to meet different needs and preferences:

  • Simple Leather Collars: Basic leather collars are versatile and suitable for a wide range of breeds, including Frenchies. They are famous for being durable and exuding a classic appearance. When selecting a leather collar, make sure that it is high quality and comfortable for your Frenchie to wear.
  • Decorative Collars: These collars come in a variety of designs, patterns, and colors, allowing to add a touch of personal style to your Frenchie's look. Again, the key consideration is comfort, as your Frenchie should not be irritated by any decorative elements.
  • Tightening Collars: Also called choke collars, these are mainly used for educational purposes during training. These collars should be used cautiously and under the guidance of a dog trainer, as they can potentially harm your Frenchie if not used correctly.

Extra factors to think about

  •  Size, Weight, and Temperament: All are key determinants for selecting the correct harness or collar for your French Bullldog. Smaller Frenchies may require lighter and more delicate options, while larger and more robust pets may need sturdier and wider straps. Consider your Frenchie's personality as well; a calm and well-behaved French Bulldog may do well with a basic collar, whereas a more energetic or stubborn Frenchie may benefit more from a harness which offers better control.
  • Avoid Protruding Elements: If your dog frequently interacts with other pets or participates in playdates, it's advisable to avoid harnesses and collars with protruding elements or sharp decorations. These elements can pose a risk of injury to your Frenchie or other pups during playtime or social interactions.
  • Invest Wisely: Your Frenchie's harness or collar is one of the most critical pieces of equipment you can provide. Not only does it provide safety during walks and activities, it also reflects their identity and your care for them. Don't skimp on this item; invest in a quality instrument which suits your Frenchie's needs and lifestyle.
